What is load balancing in an electric charger?

Charge balancing in an electric charger is a system that allows the available energy of the charging point to be distributed among its connectors. In other words, this functionality allows two vehicles to be charged at the same time with a single charging point.

To achieve this, the charging station integrates a system that measures the power output at all times. In this way, it is able to balance the power between two or more hoses, thus ensuring that the vehicle always receives the power it needs for its load.

Companies that can benefit from load-balancing electric chargers

This is especially important when it comes to electric vehicles, because it helps to reduce waiting times for users or customers, i.e., to increase vehicle turnover. In this sense, this type of electric vehicle charging facilities can be very useful for all types of businesses, especially for:

  • Electrolineras. These stations are the future of gas stations and the most modern ones already have charge balancing in their electric chargers.
  • Shopping malls. These are places where consumers can spend several hours or even a whole morning or afternoon. For this reason, it is important for parking lots to introduce charging points.
  • Companies with large fleets of medium and large tonnage. Companies that have already made the leap to an electric car fleet, or are in the midst of this transition, can save a lot of money by installing a balanced charger.

Any of these businesses, and many others, can benefit from chargers that include this balancing functionality, as they improve load distribution. But to answer this question, let’s look at an example. Let’s suppose that a certain company (such as a petrol station, a shopping mall, a hotel or a restaurant) decides to install several recharging points for its parking lot.

Here we would have two options: install two 30 kW chargers, or install a 60 kW charging point with load balancing. The advantage of doing the latter is that it saves money, since a single point can be used to charge two vehicles at the same time. In addition, there are other advantages for users, such as greater ease in finding free chargers.
